all began. The Cortez, Dolores and Mancos area is "the
archaeological center of the United States." This area
was the heart of the Anasazi ("ancient ones") civilization.

experience hundreds of Anasazi archaeological sites at Mesa
Verde National Park, Hovenweep, Escalante and Ute Mountain.
Participate in archaeological digs, see exhibits at the Anasazi
Heritage Center, watch Indian dancers and listen to Indian
storytellers. The area also offers outstanding fishing and
boating at McPhee Reservoir, whitewater rafting down the Dolores
River, and an excellent golf course. Great selection of Ute
and Navajo pottery, jewelry and art at local galleries. |
